WILMINGTON, NC-September 13, 2022-A local nonprofit is on the radar of North Shore Hawaii native and former pro-surfer, Jack Johnson. Known for his laid back acoustic guitar melodies and smooth baritone vocals, many may be unaware of his dedication to the environment or that he typically donates 100% of his concert proceeds to charities. His foundation is doubling donations up to $2500 from now until October 15th for Wilmington-based Plastic Ocean Project (POP). “We are blown away by this gesture, considering all of the worthwhile nonprofits out there, especially here in North Carolina,” reflected POP’s director, Bonnie Monteleone. In fact, this marks the third time since 2014 that Johnson has tapped POP for this honored designation. In 2008 Jack and his wife, Kim founded the Johnson Ohana Foundation. It is a non-profit public charity that supports organizations that focus on art, environmental and music education. This focus merges beautifully with the work of POP, who works to solve the problems of plastic pollution with art and educational outreach plus research. In late August, Johnson performed in Raleigh and invited POP to take part in his “Village Green”-a designated area set aside specifically for nonprofits to connect concert-goers with environmental charities. Johnson also encourages fans to cycle or walk to the venue, bring their own refillable water bottles and concessions vendors are urged to use local suppliers and compostable containers. Also in 2008, Johnson began his social action network, “All at Once”, whose stance is that an individual action, multiplied by millions, creates global change. From now until October 15th, Johnson is matching donations up to $2500 made to POP through his foundation. Those funds are earmarked to support POP’s internship program and will pay for much needed research supplies.
